    Film Desciption:

Not Really Now Not Any More is a three-channel film situated in Poplar, East London, working through the sedimented relation between histories of labour and the architectures of contemporary capital. Three sites anchor the film: Balfron Tower, designed by Marxist architect Ernö Goldfinger and now in the throes of privatisation; Tower Hamlets Cemetery, overgrown and feral; and Canary Wharf, the citadel of financial speculation.

The title is taken from Alan Garner’s novel Red Shift, a text in which temporalities collapse and historical trauma reverberates across centuries. In resonance with Garner, the film attends to the repetitions and disjunctions of place: how class struggle, enclosure, and dispossession recur under different names, architectures, and rhetorics.

Poplar becomes a prism of contradiction. The monumental glass of Canary Wharf manifests wealth concentration on the scale of nations, while the borough’s residents face endemic poverty, housing precarity, and food insecurity. The ideological promise of “trickle-down” economics reveals itself instead as extraction and displacement. Through its spatial montage, Not Really Now Not Any More asks how neoliberal capitalism re-stages older histories of exploitation, and what forms of collective memory might persist or fracture in the present.
